EDUCATING INDIA'S YOUTH

In 1996, we started CKG High School, an English medium CBSE school, in Bharuch, Gujarat with the goal of providing low cost high quality education to lower income children. Today, with a student body strength of 470 children, the school is completely self sustaining and has had a 100% pass rate for the last 9 years.

We also support the Friends of Tribals Society, which serves to educate our tribal youth. We fund 100 tribal schools across the country

RURAL EMPOWERMENT

One of the social initiatives we support is called "Global Parli". Global Parli is a pilot project that aims to promote Nation building through revival and empowerment of the villages of India. As Gandhiji said, India lives in her villages and unless we find a way to sustainably empower our villages, our nation can never truly prosper. 

As part of this project, 15 villages have been selected in the drought-prone Parli tehsil in Marathawada for 360 degree development. The primary goal of this initiative is to increase the per capita income of each family by 250% in 3 years. The idea is to ensure that our farmers are compensated well enough that their children choose to farm rather than to migrate to the cities. This will not only reduce widespread farmer distress by boosting our agrarian economy, but will also reduce strain on the urban centers. 

This will be a model development to create a progressive, economically viable and prosperous rural India. These will serve as a transformative process that can be replicated across the country.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

We were green long before it was cool to be.
When Borosil Renewables first started its greenfield operations in Bharuch, the surrounding environment was arid, with barely any vegetation. Over the years, we have turned it into lush green oasis, so much so that the temperature in our facility is on average 2 degrees lower than the temperature outside. And what is more, this entire green cover is maintained using the water from our rainwater harvesting efforts. 

11% of all the electricity we consume comes from wind energy. Our other energy efficient measures include advanced waste heat recovery systems and solar lighting. 

As industry leaders, we take our responsibility towards the environment very seriously, and continuously challenge ourselves to integrate eco friendly solutions as part of our business. We not only meet Indian pollution norms, but conform to the stringent EU pollution norms. Our energy conservation efforts have been recognized by the Government of India and we were awarded the National Energy Conservation Award in 2006.

PRODUCT INNOVATION

From eliminating the highly toxic antimony from solar glass, to making a solar glass with the world's lowest iron content, to incorporating the use of waste materials such as egg shells and mining waste in the manufacturing process - sustainability and innovation have been at the heart of our journey that has been further fuelled by the spirit of ˜Make in India"™. 

We were the first company in the world to eliminate antimony from our solar glass. Antimony is a highly toxic element that is not only a carcinogen but also a genotoxic chemical causing chromosomal damage in human leukocytes. At the end of their life, solar modules are crushed and dumped in landfills. Once crushed, the antimony in the solar glass then leeches out of the glass and permeates into the soil. Soil containing antimony pollutes ground water, which is not only what we then drink in our homes, but also what is used for irrigation of crops and vegetation. With the exponential growth in solar modules, it was imperative to find an environmentally friendly and sustainable solution for the antimony problem, and Borosil is proud to be the first company in the world to have achieved it! 

We are also working on making our packaging more environmentally friendly by eliminating the use of thermocol, staying away from plastic and by reducing the amount of packaging material used wherever possible. 

We are also committed to ensuring that we will focus on products that are not only good for us, but good for our planet.

BUILDING EXCELLENCE IN SPORT

Borosil has partnered with the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS), an initiative by JSW Group. IIS aims to develop the next Olympic champions from India by changing the way Indian athletes perform at the highest level against the best in the world. The target is for IIS athletes to win 5 medals for India at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. 

We believe that excellence in sport has a positive impact on nation building and national pride. It is an important avenue for womens empowerment, and that the only way we can see the furtherment of sport at the highest levels is if private players come together to bring world class facilities and training to aspiring athletes. 

Borosil is supporting the girl's judo program. In such a small space of time, we have seen unprecedented success with Thangam Tababi Devi winning Gold at the Asian Judo Cadet Championships, Chanam Rebina Devi winning Bronze at the Commonwealth Youth Games and Pinky Balhara winning Bronze at the Senior National Judo Championships.

Borosil is also partners to Pro-Kabbadi Haryana Steelers Team for last two sessions. Hydration is of upmost imporatnace for performance. Borosil offers the ideal solutions to fulfill Hydration needs in most healthiest way.

FURTHERING INDIA'S SOFT POWER

India has the ability to be one of the largest tourist destinations in the world. With our rich cultural heritage, we have the ability to not only attract tourists, but to wield soft power through creating awareness of and allowing people to engage with our rich cultural heritage. 

The Sculpture Park at Madhavendra Palace, Naharagarh Fort, Jaipur, is a true amalgamation of the best of India's past and present, made possible through a unique collaboration between the public and private sector. Borosil is one of the primary corporate supporters of the Sculpture Park in Jaipur, an initiative brought to life by Saat Saath Arts. The first of its kind in India, the Sculpture Park is an attempt to make art a part of public consciousness by bringing it out from the living rooms into public spaces, so that it is accessible and understandable to anybody who engages with it. 

India has one of the richest traditions of art consciousness which is reflected in our monuments, temples, textiles and music - and this sculpture park, located in the beautiful Nahargarh fort is an attempt to combine the preservation of our artistic heritage with the promotion of contemporary art. 

Since the opening in December 2017, there has been over a 40% increase in tourists to the Nahargarh Fort.

CREATING A CULTURE OF GIVING BACK

Giving back to society is something that we at Borosil hold very dear to our hearts. In order to involve all our employees in our CSR efforts, we allow each individual employee to take 2 paid days per year to assist in any CSR initiative of his/her choice. The employee is free to assist with any program that the company is supporting or alternatively can spend time on any social initiative that is close to his/her heart as well. 

Writing a cheque is easy. However, the real satisfaction in giving involves giving off ourselves, with our time and energy. Ever since we have started this program, there has been a noticeable increase in the morale of our people as well as an increase in empathy towards their fellow colleagues..

ANTI PLASTIC

Our Planet is drowning in Plastic. We as individuals have realized the threat is real and looming large. While non bio degradables have a big impact on our environment, the more immediate and direct impact is also on our own health and well-being.   Every second there’s at least a million tonnes of plastic produced and disposed into the oceans, directly damaging the marine life and in turn affecting the human population too. The adversity of Plastic pollution isn’t something that the world already isn’t aware of. Every bit of plastic that has ever been produced on the planet since the beginning of time still exists in this environment, making the situation of any more plastic produce a huge threat to the environment than it already is. The same properties that make plastics so convenient — their durability and resistance to degradation, also make them nearly impossible for nature to completely break down. Plastics can become rooted in animals' tissue through consumption or respiration. Most plastic items never fully disappear; they just get smaller and smaller and turn into microplastics, which are unconsioucally swallowed by farm animals or fish by mistaking them for food, and thus find their way onto our dinner plates. They’re also found in majority of the world’s tap water.

According to a research presented by the UN, plastic has become so ubiquitous in the natural environment that scientists have even suggested it could serve as an ecological indicator of the Anthropocene era.

2018 however saw a remarkable shift in a growing trend of awareness campaings where people are slowly realizing the long term health hazards of using plastic for food and water consumption and storage. It was an impactful year of change. Change from plastic tiffin’s to glass or stainless steel food containers, from plastic straws to paper straws or no straws at all and many more such trend setting changes.

The primary concern with human health in regards to plastics, is more directed towards the different contaminated and cancer-causing chemicals used to make these plastics and what they carry. Cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and abnormalities in liver enzymes are a few disorders that can arise from even a minimal contact to chemicals like BPA (Biphenyl A). Researches have established BPA as an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC), which prevent hormones from working correctly in our bodies. Our hormones regulate just about every cell in the body, cell that help us eat, sleep, and reproduce. Exposure to EDC’s, like BPA, increases a person’s risk of obesity and diabetes. Although these effects have been more widely studied than other types of plastics, it is still used in the production of clothing and other items for human consumption.

The world is though slowly but definitely waking up to the problem, and every individual is starting to act. There are a number of things that can be done to reduce the use of plastic and create more awareness— from running public awareness heath campaigns, to offering incentive for recycling, to introducing taxes or even banning certain products out-and-out. In the last decade, many of national and local governments around the world have adopted policies to reduce the use of disposable plastic. And the number is constantly set to grow.

But the key is to reduce human contact with plastic and minimize our consumption and contact. A simple way to do this is to map out our individual plastic touchpoints in our daily lives and replace them with other solutions. Kitchenware for cooking and storing food, glass or steel containers to take liquids and food on the go and other such solutions. Of late we at Borosil have observed this requirement and have built new product innovations to meet this demand.

We have supported institutional and corporate endeavors to make their offices and campuses plastic free by offering these solutions.

The solution to the plastic hazard is really quite simple: produce and use less plastic. This is where we, as individuals can make a difference by reducing the amount of plastic we use in our daily lives. We at Borosil are working towards making this conversion and change easier for everyone.

For every product made of plastic for food and beverage, there is almost always a reusable alternative that we can turn to. So the next time you use a plastic container, think of how it can end up in your environment and your own body making it pertinent to switch to eco-friendlier solutions.
